This course is designed to give participants access to different ways of working, moving from a more naturalistic and objective tradition to the more Modern and subjective ways of working found in the twentieth century avant-garde. Looking closely at various modern masters, we will work with a variety of exercises based on their explorations and inventions.

These exercises are designed to investigate various aspects of abstraction, and Ways of Working, as they developed in relation to still life. In turn, these investigations will help equip us with tools and language to find our own unique ways of painting.

During the eight week session we will look at and work with Cezanne, Picasso and Braque. Among the different aspects of painting and abstraction that we will work with will be composition, form, space, mass and touch. Risk and play will be encouraged!
