I began painting this series and exhibited the first works in two exhibitions before continuing what became a three-year inquiry. What began as an investigation into different attitudes of paint handling and questions of form and space, eventually led to questions concerning awareness and what happens in my mind as I move from panel to panel. The space in between the paintings, that is, the gallery wall, became very important as a stand in for the gap in my mind as I moved from form to form. I began to understand that what I was creating was not so much a series of paintings and drawings as much as an installation poised to engage the viewer’s state of awareness.
An abridged version of this series (approximately one quarter) was exhibited at the Nolanda Gallery at Naropa University. Another abridged version (approximately one half) was exhibited at 808 Projects in Denver.
Gallery Notes
Ideally the gallery space would be large enough to accommodate the entire series. Appropriate spacing is needed to take into creative account the need to form the right size “gap” in between the panels.
Acquisition Notes
While each panel is brought to aesthetic wholeness and is able to stand alone, the true subject of the series lies in the relationships between one panel and another, and what occurs in our minds as we explore that relationship. Suggested acquisition is at least two panels with the second panel of equal or lesser value receiving a substantial discount.
