Fine art models provide a valuable service to the arts community. In order to ensure a professional environment for models, faculty/students, facilitators/artists, we ask that the following model standards and practices be followed:
- Facilitator-Instructor / Artist-Classroom Conduct:
- Silence cell phones & put them away while the model is unrobed to ensure no unauthorized photographs or videos
- Never photograph a model, without first asking and being granted model permission via the instructor/model coordinator. Models always have the right to decline a nude photograph (although, the many of them are used to and totally okay with it!)
- Once a break ends & the pose commences, please refrain from talking as the model is concentrating/musing
- As an artist, if you arrive late or leave early, please attempt to coordinate your entrance/exit timing with breaks as to not disturb the model and other artist’s focus
- Never go into/onto the model’s private, designated areas (dais/changing/break area)
- As an instructor, never touch a model without first asking and being granted permission (for example, when taping or chalking for a long pose, or when asking to touch ‘such and such ligament where it attaches to such and such bone’ on a model’s elbow with a physical pointing stick)
- You can certainly be friendly, but do not overly converse with the model or ask the model personal questions. Any relevant on-site questions or requests should be made via the moderator (instructor). Never flirt with a model or “ask a model out”
- If client or individual artist present would like to book any AOM model, either at the same venue or at a different venue, they are to do so through AOM only
- Do not make comments about the model’s body shape or reproductive organs
- Please check your booking sheet (or ask the model on site) to ensure that you are using the model’s preferred pronouns
- Do not ask a model for their personal contact information, or offer yours to the model. AOM serves the role as the sole liaison for all matters
- Only facilitators, participating artists, faculty, students and authorized guests participating in a scheduled modeling session are to be present while a model is posing
- Classroom doors must be closed and locked during modeling sessions, OR a sign must be posted directing the guest to knock and wait until the instructor greets them at the door, to ensure privacy from the general/non participating artist public
- Faculty/group facilitators are required to be present at all times while a model is posing nude
- If using more than one model, instructors should have models maintain distance according to the comfort level of the models
- Provide a personal fan and a heater for the model (or keep the room at a comfortable temperature for the nude, at moments cold, at others sweating, model in mind above everyone else)
- Provide the model 5- minute breaks every roughly 20/25 minutes (or at the models discretion- occasionally, when comfortable in a long pose, some models prefer to remain in their spot and power through the pose; in which case, the pose should end early equivalent to the saved break time)
- Provide the model with a private dressing/undressing area or a bathroom
