PAINTING THROUGH MODERN MASTERS: Manet & Morisot, online
Details
What was Manet’s project and what does his way of painting give us?
What was Morisot’s project and how does she go further than her friend, Manet?!
Continuing with the ongoing exploration of Modern Masters as a source for inspiration and direction, we’ll be working with still life as a motif, first through the lens of Manet, and then through the lens of Morisot.
- Through Manet we will work with tonality and broad, gestural paint-handling as a means of describing form.
- With Morisot we will explore what it means to take the impulse and gesture further not only with form but with space and light as well.
- Through both Manet and Morisot we will explore how brushwork not only describes form, but can energize and empower a painting.
The Weekly Syllabus:
- Week One: A Presentation of Manet’s work as an introduction to painterly ways of working and questions of Personal Relevance. We’ll begin a drawing of the still life.
- Week Two: Working in black and white we’ll experiment with broad brushwork to describe the observed form, space and light.
- Week Three: Continuing with painterly brush-handling, we start a still life with a full palette.
- Week Four: We’ll continue the still life painting – deepening our understanding of broad marking to describe form.
- Week Five: An introduction to Morisot’s project, how it was influenced by Manet, and how she took it further. We’ll begin a watercolor of our still life through the lens of Morisot.
- Week Six: Working in black and white we’ll experiment with gestural brushwork to describe the observed form, space and light.
- Week Seven: Continuing with gestural brush-handling, we start a still life with a full palette, gathering and following inner impulse.
- Week Eight: We’ll continue the still life painting – deepening our understanding of gestural, broad marking to describe form.
Painting, as a form of discovery, becomes a vehicle for inner exploration and a metaphor for living.
