Among the many aspects to making a successful, strong and original image, composition is primary and key. At the same time that there are myriad rules to making a successful composition, there is also a basic, felt mystery why some things work and others don’t, and finding one’s own particular way of composing. This course is designed to give participants a stronger working knowledge of composition, the various ways of how it functions in great painting and an exploration of how that might translate into our own work. Through hands-on exercises analyzing compositions of masterworks we will become familiar with the dynamics of the rectangle and the interplay of formal elements within it. Work will be done in a variety of media: graphite, charcoal, acrylic and oils – on paper and canvas.
