DESCRIPTION:Meeting LIVE Online for 8 sessions\, every other Tuesday. \nSeptember 8\, 22\, October 6\, 20\, November 3\, 17\, December 1\, and 15. \nSpace is limited. \nOver the course of the fall months we will gather online\, every other week\, to continue and deepen the conversation. \nWe will be reading Power and Presence: A Handbook for Painting in Our Time.  \nFrom the back cover: \n“Today to try to paint the existent is an act of resistance instigating hope.”  — John Berger \nReading these words in the bookstore of the Tate Modern over twenty years ago led Jordan Wolfson to begin a search for meaning — through his own studio practice and his writing.  Part social discourse\, part spiritual investigation\, and part hands-on painting manual\, this book offers an in-depth exploration of the essential nature of painting\, and why it may be of critical importance for our civilization.  \n“If we are going to survive as a world\, we will need to recognize and embrace our inherent shared Being.  I believe painting\, handmade two-dimensional image making\, has a key role to play in this necessary recognition.”  \nEach meeting we will discuss a chapter of the book.  A few chapters will be covered in two sessions.  The Fall Reading Group session will cover the first part of the book and we will continue in the Winter session with the second part of the book. \nJordan will be facilitating the discussion in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. \nWine and nibbles recommended\, although not essential.  Open to painters and non-painters\, of all persuasions\, world-wide. \n\nA Mighty Networks Group page will be provided for posting our work\, for supportive community and creative sharing. DESCRIPTION:Meeting LIVE Online for 8 sessions\, every other Tuesday. \nSeptember 8\, 22\, October 6\, 20\, November 3\, 17\, December 1\, and 15. \nSpace is limited. \nOver the course of the fall months we will gather online\, every other week\, to continue and deepen the conversation. \nWe will be reading Power and Presence: A Handbook for Painting in Our Time.  \nFrom the back cover: \n“Today to try to paint the existent is an act of resistance instigating hope.”  — John Berger \nReading these words in the bookstore of the Tate Modern over twenty years ago led Jordan Wolfson to begin a search for meaning — through his own studio practice and his writing.  Part social discourse\, part spiritual investigation\, and part hands-on painting manual\, this book offers an in-depth exploration of the essential nature of painting\, and why it may be of critical importance for our civilization.  \n“If we are going to survive as a world\, we will need to recognize and embrace our inherent shared Being.  I believe painting\, handmade two-dimensional image making\, has a key role to play in this necessary recognition.”  \nEach meeting we will discuss a chapter of the book.  A few chapters will be covered in two sessions.  The Fall Reading Group session will cover the first part of the book and we will continue in the Winter session with the second part of the book. \nJordan will be facilitating the discussion in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. \nWine and nibbles recommended\, although not essential.  Open to painters and non-painters\, of all persuasions\, world-wide. \n\nA Mighty Networks Group page will be provided for posting our work\, for supportive community and creative sharing. DESCRIPTION:An 8-Week LIVE in-studio course. \nFor All Levels.  Limited to 8 participants. \nHow do we Explore Painting as an Expansive\, Creative & Playful Engagement? \nHow do we court and dance with Spontaneity\, Risk & Courage in the studio? \nFor those new to Abstraction — we’ll be exploring and playing with formal elements such as line\, shape\, form\, color\, edge\, texture\, paint handling\, and composition\, without concern for objective depiction.  We’ll be using a wide range of materials\, mediums and tools.  What can we DO with all of this stuff? \nFor those already familiar with Abstraction — how do we take our painting further?  How do we get lost and find our way back?  How do we strengthen our intuition and genuinely discover MORE of who we are as painters? \nThe painting goes through many transformations during the course\, and students become familiar with painting as a flexible and ceaselessly changeable medium. \nI’ll be giving weekly demonstrations of various aspects of the journey into non-representational abstraction\, looking at examples from Modern Abstract masters such as de Kooning and Joan Mitchell\, and discussing writings from my teacher\, Patrick Ahearne\, related to our shared exploration. \n“A gesture in paint\nis not simply a gesture in painting –\nit is an event in the world.”\n— Paul Goodman\n \nA familiarity with the process of painting in its more physically dense and muscular aspects gives the student a context and experience to draw upon no matter what their future direction\, abstract or representational\, from observation or imagination or memory. \nThe Weekly Syllabus: \n\nWeek One: Introduction to the Painting Journey.
