SUMMARY:GROUP CRIT - Fall 2024\, online
DESCRIPTION:Meeting LIVE Online for 8 sessions\, every other Tuesday.\n \nSeptember 3\, 17\, October 1\, 15\, 29\, November 12\, 26\, December 10. \nJordan will be facilitating a group critique for painters who are interested in exploring together deeper aspects of painting\, what it means for each of us to paint\, and how to strengthen our work\, both formally and internally. \nWhat makes a painting strong and imbues it with presence? \nHow does one clarify one’s own direction and path as a painter? \nHow can we share our work together and create a vital sense of community? \nFor many of us\, we paint because we need to.  There is something in the act of painting that deeply enlivens\, brings us close to truth of our lives – that in-the-moment sense of being present\, engaged\, alive.  There is the possibility of this deepening of engagement becoming our ongoing way of working\, and bringing to our studio practice a fullness of being that empowers our work\, formally and energetically.  How does this happen?  This question will be an ongoing part of our conversation during our sessions. \n  \n“Painting is impact.”  — Avigdor Arikha \n  \nIn a personal\, honest\, friendly and supportive atmosphere\, we will be gathering online for five sessions\, every other week.\n \nThe group will be limited to 10 participants.  Participants are expected to be engaged in their studio practice in an ongoing way\, and are intermediate\, advanced or professional. \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.

SUMMARY:Abstraction as Discovery\, in-studio
DESCRIPTION:An 8-Week In-Studio Course.   \nHow do we move from objective skill-based painting to an Expansive\, Creative & Playful Engagement? \nHow do we court and dance with Spontaneity\, Risk & Courage in the studio? \nThis course has been taught for over 20 years – helping scores of students find their own creative core and journey. \nThe course is geared both for advanced and foundations. Students are exposed to working directly with the formal elements of a painting\, such as line\, shape\, form\, color\, edge\, texture\, paint handling\, and composition. Because the painting necessarily goes through many transformations during the course\, students becomes directly familiar with painting as a flexible and ceaselessly changeable medium. \nJordan will be giving weekly demonstrations of various aspects of the journey into non-representational abstraction\, looking at examples from Modern Abstract masters such as de Kooning and Joan Mitchell\, and discussing writings from his teacher\, Patrick Ahearne\, in reference to the exploration. \n“A gesture in paint\nis not simply a gesture in painting –\nit is an event in the world.”\n— Paul Goodman\n \nA familiarity with the process of painting in its more physically dense and muscular aspects gives the student a context and experience to draw upon no matter what their future direction\, abstract or representational\, from observation or imagination or memory. \nThe Weekly Syllabus: \n\nWeek One: Introduction to the Painting Journey. Reviewing Patrick Ahearne’s text.  Jumping in and beginning.\nWeek Two: Exploring Paint Handling and Making a Mess. Now what?  Looking at Mondrian and Joan Mitchell: Figure and Ground and the Activation of Space.\nWeek Three: Composition as a Creative Discipline. Understanding Composition through the lens of Cezanne\, Analytic Cubism and de Kooning.\nWeek Four: Bringing our Lived Experience to Bear even Amidst the Morphing. Exploring Aspects of Mass\, Weight\, Space\, Light\, Movement.  Looking at Late Monet\, Philip Guston and Arshile Gorky.\nWeek Five: After the Catharsis. What does Fine Tuning look like? What does it mean to nurture the image?  Looking at Matisse and Diebenkorn.\nWeek Six: The Possibilities of Narrative and Systemic Thinking. Looking at Joan Snyder\, Terry Winters and Brice Marden.\nWeek Seven: Ways of Being.\nWeek Eight: The Ineffable Power of Painting.  How to Navigate by the Heart.  Reading the words and looking at the work of Milton Resnick.\n\nPainting\, as an open-ended form of discovery\, becomes a vehicle for inner exploration and a metaphor for living. In this way\, Abstraction as Discovery becomes a foundation course for an understanding of painting as a life practice and a long-term journey. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:The Reading Group - Fall 2024
DESCRIPTION:Meeting LIVE Online for 7 sessions\, every other Tuesday. \nSeptember 24\, October 8\, 22\, November 5\, 19\, and December 3\, 17. \nOver the course of the next few months we will be gathering online\, every other week\, to continue and deepen the conversation. \nThe selection of readings we will be covering this fall will support our larger inquiry into the deeper nature of painting.  \n  \n\n\n\nSeptember 24  John Berger\, “Steps Towards a Small Theory of the Visible (for Yves)”\, from The Shape of a Pocket\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 8  Mary Jane Jacob\, selections from Dewey for Artists\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 22    Andrew Forge\, “Painting and the Struggle for the Whole Self”\, an essay from Observation: Notation – Collected Writings of Andrew Forge\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNovember 5    Suzi Gablik\, selections from The Reenchantment of Art\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNovember 19  John Berger\, “A Professional Secret”\, from Keeping a Rendezvous\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDecember 3   Robert Hughes\, selections from Frank Auerbach\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDecember 17  Gillian Pederson-Krag\, the opening essay to her self-published monograph\n\n\n\n  \n“I first started teaching and facilitating The Reading Group back in the nineties. I was working with a group of younger painters who were developing their hands-on skills and were quite talented. I knew from my own experience that my engagement as a painter hugely benefited from reading stuff about painting that felt real\, relevant\, and stimulating – and I wanted to bring that sort of addition to the younger painters.” \nJordan will be facilitating the discussion in a supportive and friendly atmosphere.  All these books are great and worth purchasing\, but PDFs will be supplied for all of the essays and selections. \nWine and nibbles recommended\, although not essential.  Open to painters and non-painters\, of all persuasions\, world-wide. \n  \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.
