SUMMARY:FOUNDATIONS\, Morning\, in-studio
DESCRIPTION:This in-studio\, ongoing\, 8-week course is designed to give people the fundamental tools and skills to draw and oil paint from life. Working from still life\, we will learn how to translate what we see into convincing and successful renditions. We’ll start with basic drawing skills\, developing proportion\, shading and color. Working step-by-step we’ll develop a thorough understanding of oil paint and how to use it. As our mastery develops\, spontaneous play becomes part of our repertoire. \nThe course is structured as an opportunity for ongoing skill development\, allowing each participant to work and develop at their own pace and rhythm.   \nOne-on-one attention is given in a supportive and creative atmosphere. \nTo register\, simply click on the “+” sign below.

SUMMARY:Abstraction as Discovery\, in-studio
DESCRIPTION:An 8-Week In-Studio Course.   \nHow do we move from objective skill-based painting to an Expansive\, Creative & Playful Engagement? \nHow do we court and dance with Spontaneity\, Risk & Courage in the studio? \nThis course has been taught for over 20 years – helping scores of students find their own creative core and journey. \nThe course is geared both for advanced and foundations. Students are exposed to working directly with the formal elements of a painting\, such as line\, shape\, form\, color\, edge\, texture\, paint handling\, and composition. Because the painting necessarily goes through many transformations during the course\, students becomes directly familiar with painting as a flexible and ceaselessly changeable medium. \nJordan will be giving weekly demonstrations of various aspects of the journey into non-representational abstraction\, looking at examples from Modern Abstract masters such as de Kooning and Joan Mitchell\, and discussing writings from his teacher\, Patrick Ahearne\, in reference to the exploration. \n“A gesture in paint\nis not simply a gesture in painting –\nit is an event in the world.”\n— Paul Goodman\n \nA familiarity with the process of painting in its more physically dense and muscular aspects gives the student a context and experience to draw upon no matter what their future direction\, abstract or representational\, from observation or imagination or memory. \nThe Weekly Syllabus: \n\nWeek One: Introduction to the Painting Journey. Reviewing Patrick Ahearne’s text.  Jumping in and beginning.\nWeek Two: Exploring Paint Handling and Making a Mess. Now what?  Looking at Mondrian and Joan Mitchell: Figure and Ground and the Activation of Space.\nWeek Three: Composition as a Creative Discipline. Understanding Composition through the lens of Cezanne\, Analytic Cubism and de Kooning.\nWeek Four: Bringing our Lived Experience to Bear even Amidst the Morphing. Exploring Aspects of Mass\, Weight\, Space\, Light\, Movement.  Looking at Late Monet\, Philip Guston and Arshile Gorky.\nWeek Five: After the Catharsis. What does Fine Tuning look like? What does it mean to nurture the image?  Looking at Matisse and Diebenkorn.\nWeek Six: The Possibilities of Narrative and Systemic Thinking. Looking at Joan Snyder\, Terry Winters and Brice Marden.\nWeek Seven: Now what? Free floating as a Way of Being.\nWeek Eight: The Ineffable Power of Painting.  How to Navigate by the Heart.  Reading the words and looking at the work of Milton Resnick.\n\nPainting\, as an open-ended form of discovery\, becomes a vehicle for inner exploration and a metaphor for living. In this way\, Abstraction as Discovery becomes a foundation course for an understanding of painting as a life practice and a long-term journey. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:GROUP CRIT - Winter/Spring 2024\, online
DESCRIPTION:Meeting LIVE Online for 8 sessions\, every other Tuesday.\n \nJanuary 9\, and 23\, February 6 and 20\, March 5 and 19\, and April 2 and 16. \nJordan will be facilitating a group critique for painters who are interested in exploring together deeper aspects of painting\, what it means for each of us to paint\, and how to strengthen our work\, both formally and internally. \nWhat makes a painting strong and imbues it with presence? \nHow does one clarify one’s own direction and path as a painter? \nHow can we share our work together and create a vital sense of community? \nFor many of us\, we paint because we need to.  There is something in the act of painting that deeply enlivens\, brings us close to truth of our lives – that in-the-moment sense of being present\, engaged\, alive.  There is the possibility of this deepening of engagement becoming our ongoing way of working\, and bringing to our studio practice a fullness of being that empowers our work\, formally and energetically.  How does this happen?  This question will be an ongoing part of our conversation during our sessions. \n  \n“Painting is impact.”  — Avigdor Arikha \n  \nIn a personal\, honest\, friendly and supportive atmosphere\, we will be gathering online for five sessions\, every other week.\n \nThe group will be limited to 10 participants.  Participants are expected to be engaged in their studio practice in an ongoing way\, and are intermediate\, advanced or professional. \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.

SUMMARY:FLOWERS!\, online
DESCRIPTION:How does one paint a bunch of flowers and make them ALIVE? Working in oils within the tradition of floral still life\, I’ll be demonstrating step-by-step\, how to set up a convincing rendition of fresh flowers. \nThis 8-week\, online\, course will provide an opportunity to learn how to paint flowers.   \nThe first four weeks will focus on gaining clarity of form and color.   \nThe last four weeks will explore more experimental and playful approaches. \n\nWeek One I’ll begin with drawing\, working with line. \nWeek Two will focus on values\, working with oils in black and white\, demonstrating how the mark can work to create the form directly. \nWeeks Three and Four will demonstrate working with tone and color mixing\, beginning with a straightforward rendition and gradually moving into more experimental and gestural marking. \nThis first part of the course we’ll look at the working methods of Manet\, Van Gogh\, and Albert York.\nWeek Five I’ll begin with drawing\, working in charcoal in a direct and gestural manner\, exploring space and form though mark and perception. \nWeek Six will continue the focus on black and white\, working with oils\, and demonstrating how experimentation and risk-taking can lead to unexpected results. \nWeek Seven and Eight will demonstrate working with color\, exploring the usage of very heavy paint\, as well as non-tonal color as a way of investigating the situation.\nDuring the second half we’ll look at painters and their use of mark\, such as Joan Mitchell \, Ann Gale and Frank Auerbach.\n\n  \nMaterials used in the demonstrations will be oil paint. Participants are welcome to use whichever materials are available and suitable for their at-home situation. \nA Mighty Networks Group page will be provided for posting our work\, for supportive community and creative sharing. Click HERE. \nAll sessions will be streamed in HIGH DEFINITION\, with 3 camera views\, providing greatly increased visual acuity of the painted surface and demonstrations. \nAll sessions will be recorded\, archived and available for repeated viewing. \nA Webinar Link will be sent out upon registration. \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.
