SUMMARY:PAINTING THROUGH MODERN MASTERS: Cezanne/Matisse/Diebenkorn\, In-Studio
DESCRIPTION:An Eight-Week In-Studio Course.   \n\n“How do I move from a skill-based mode of painting into a more personal\, stronger\, and exploratory way of working?”\n\n  \n\nThe Modern Masters course series is designed to give participants access to different ways of painting\, moving from a more naturalistic and objective tradition to more Modern and subjective ways of working found in the twentieth century avant-garde.\n\n  \nWhat was Cezanne’s project and what did that have to do with Matisse? \nWhat was Matisse’s project and what did that have to do with Diebenkorn? \nAnd what were all three doing and what does that have to do with our own painting?! \nContinuing with the ongoing exploration of Modern Masters as a source for inspiration and direction\, we’ll be working with still life as a motif\, first through the lens of Cezanne\, and then through the lens of Matisse and lastly\, Diebenkorn. \n\nThrough Cezanne we will explore the deeper nature of painting from perception\, and its creative relationship to the discovery of strong composition.\nWith Matisse we will work with color as light\, shape/rhythms\, and the meaning of fine-tuning an edge.\nDiebenkorn will give us a chance to play with what we have gathered in a full and painterly and exploratory way.\n\n\n  \n\nThe Weekly Syllabus: \n\nWeek One: A Presentation on Cezanne’s project as an introduction to the Deeper Possibilities of Painting.  Beginning our Still Life painting a la Cezanne and his questions.\nWeek Two: Continuing the painting through the lens of Cezanne.\nWeek Three: An introduction to Matisse’s project and how it was influenced by Cezanne.  Beginning our still life painting through the lens of Matisse.\nWeek Four: Continuing the still life painting and focusing on shape\, compositional re-working\, and edges.\nWeek Five: A 3rd session on the still life painting through the lens of Matisse.\nWeek Six: An introduction to the still life painting of Diebenkorn.  Quick\, playful experimentations with DRAWING still life in with mixed-media through the lens of Diebenkorn.\nWeek Seven: Continuing our exploration of still life in PAINTING through the lens of Diebenkorn.\nWeek Eight: Continuing our exploration of still life in PAINTING through the lens of Diebenkorn.\n\n  \nPainting\, as a form of discovery\, becomes a vehicle for inner exploration and a metaphor for living. \n  \n\n\n

SUMMARY:COMPOSITION as an AWARENESS PRACTICE
DESCRIPTION:In this LIVE\, online\, 8-week course we will emphasize the formal aspects of composition. How does the act of strengthening and resolving a painting relate to the fundamental ground of Awareness? What is the role of the rectangle? What does “wholeness” of the image mean\, and how is it achieved? How does one make compositional decisions and carry them out? Each week we will explore\, in a hands-on approach\, different aspects of the creative discipline of composition through the perspective of Awareness. \nA goal of this course is the deepening and strengthening of each participant’s painting practice; expanding and enriching the meaning\, experience\, and expression of the act of painting. \nThe weekly syllabus: \nWeek 1: Discuss what strong composition entails.  Look at examples from Old Masters through Modern painter.  Examine the 2 main pictorially energetic types of composition\, and the 3 main methods of achieving strong composition.  Looking at the relationship between strong composition\, wholeness\, and Consciousness.  Demonstrating the beginning of compositional decision making. \nWeek 2: Discuss the first crossroads in compositional decision making.  ROUND 1: Look at works submitted by course participants.  Demonstrate possible compositional moves.  Discuss the difference in composition between working representationally and non-objectively. \nWeek 3: What does it take\, inwardly\, to fine-tune a painting into wholeness?  Learning how to receive and attend to a painting.  What does it mean to wait? Discussing compositional decision making and mindfulness. \nWeek 4: ROUND 2 of looking at course participants’ work.  Demonstrating with my own work; making compositional decisions with unfinished paintings. \nWeek 5: Looking at unfinished paintings by Cezanne from the perspective of Consciousness.  What are the implications for us?  Demonstrating beginning a composition through the lens of Cezanne. \nWeek 6: Taking the unfinished piece from Session 5 and working it further.  Relating the previous material from the course as we continue to develop the piece. \nWeek 7: Demonstrating how to look at\, and draw and paint from\, Master paintings in relation to composition.  What is the difference between copying a painting and analyzing a painting in terms of its composition?  How does analyzing a masterpiece’s pictorial composition relate to Consciousness? \nWeek 8: ROUND 3 of looking at course participants’ work.  Next Steps. \nA Members Only Mighty Networks group page will be provided for posting our work\, for supportive community and creative sharing. I’ll be conducting weekly reviews of the posted work. To go to the group page please CLICK HERE. \nAll sessions will be streamed in HIGH DEFINITION\, providing greatly increased visual acuity of the painted surface and demonstrations. \nAll sessions will be recorded\, archived and available for repeated viewing. \nA Webinar Link will be sent out upon registration. \nTo register click on the “+” sign below. \n
