DESCRIPTION:Meeting LIVE Online for 8 sessions\, every other Tuesday.\n \nJanuary 3\, 17\, 31\, February 14\, 28\, March 14\, April 11\, 25 \nJordan will be facilitating a group critique for painters who are interested in exploring together deeper aspects of painting\, what it means for each of us to paint\, and how to strengthen our work\, both formally and internally. \nWhat makes a painting strong and imbues it with presence? \nHow does one clarify one’s own direction and path as a painter? \nHow can we share our work together and create a vital sense of community? \nFor many of us\, we paint because we need to.  There is something in the act of painting that deeply enlivens\, brings us close to truth of our lives – that in-the-moment sense of being present\, engaged\, alive.  There is the possibility of this deepening of engagement becoming our ongoing way of working\, and bringing to our studio practice a fullness of being that empowers our work\, formally and energetically.  How does this happen?  This question will be an ongoing part of our conversation during our sessions. \n  \n“Painting is impact.”  — Avigdor Arikha \n  \nIn a personal\, honest\, friendly and supportive atmosphere\, we will be gathering online for five sessions\, every other week.\n \nThe group will be limited to 10 participants.  Participants are expected to be engaged in their studio practice in an ongoing way\, and are intermediate\, advanced or professional. \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.

SUMMARY:PAINTING AS CREATIVE EMPOWERMENT
DESCRIPTION:***This course is part of the 8-Month training\, PAINTING\, POWER & PRESENCE\, and is available a la carte for those that are not able to participate in the full training.*** \nA LIVE Online 8-week course. \nThe course time has been increased by an ADDITIONAL 30 MINUTES to allow for ample time to share our work together during the online session. \n  \nThings often occur in our lives that we have limited control over – and that can be difficult\, to say the least.  But one arena which is truly within the scope of our ability to make a difference is within our studio – our drawing and our painting.  That we can dig into and bring to fullness.  \nMany of us feel a deep urge to create meaningful\, satisfying work – but we find ourselves stuck\, somehow held back from digging in more deeply.  We may do fine in classes and workshops but feel doubts about ourselves as painters\, and those doubts keep us from exploring our own direction.  Or perhaps we’re able to start exploring in our studios but we have difficulty returning to the work and sustaining its development\, feeling frustrated\, or feeling that the work just turns into a mess\, or the painting starts out fresh but then sort of gets tight and stuck. \nYou can change that — and empower your painting practice. \nThere is a very real possibility of transforming your engagement with painting into a significant\, vital\, and powerful painting practice.  If that is of interest to you\, but you find yourself unable to move forward\, I encourage you to take this course.  \nWe’re going to be taking the very obstacles that we face as painters\, our doubts and fears and frustrations\, and instead of overcoming them\, we’re going to use them as gateways — that open us to energies that fuel and motivate our marking\, our explorations and painting. Instead of solving our uncertainties before we draw or paint\, we’ll follow them. We’ll go into the uncertainty as we work\, as we mark\, and see where it leads.  \nI’ll be facilitating a whole series of LIVE exercises\, working directly with an array of difficult emotional energies.  Accompanying the demonstrations will be a series of Power Point presentations looking at various Master Painters\, giving examples of how they worked with these same energies in their paintings.  After the first section of the course working with a range of emotional energies\, the second section will turn to questions of development\, resolution\,  and “finish”.  We’ll explore how to return to the painting and develop it with fresh and vital engagement.  We’ll also examine aspects of composition and “finish” in the context of creative empowerment\, learning how to bring paintings to a wholeness that feels real and personal. \nIn addition to the live demos there will be an ongoing LIVE Q&A\, encouraging dialogue and individual understanding.  Each session will be recorded and available for repeated personal review at your own pace.  Participants will be encouraged to do the exercises either during our live session or on their own\, to discover their own achievements and challenges\, and to help clarify their ongoing journey and questions.   \nWeek One: Demos working with energies of anxiety and insecurity\, through both drawing and painting\, representationally and abstractly. SUMMARY:PAINTING THROUGH MODERN MASTERS: Cezanne/Matisse/Diebenkorn\, In-Studio
DESCRIPTION:An Eight-Week In-Studio Course.   \n\n“How do I move from a skill-based mode of painting into a more personal\, stronger\, and exploratory way of working?”\n\n  \n\nThe Modern Masters course series is designed to give participants access to different ways of painting\, moving from a more naturalistic and objective tradition to more Modern and subjective ways of working found in the twentieth century avant-garde.\n\n  \nWhat was Cezanne’s project and what did that have to do with Matisse?  \nWhat was Matisse’s project and what did that have to do with Diebenkorn? \nAnd what were all three doing and what does that have to do with our own painting?! \nContinuing with the ongoing exploration of Modern Masters as a source for inspiration and direction\, we’ll be working with still life as a motif\, first through the lens of Cezanne\, and then through the lens of Matisse and lastly\, Diebenkorn. \n\nThrough Cezanne we will explore the deeper nature of painting from perception\, and its creative relationship to the discovery of strong composition.\nWith Matisse we will work with color as light\, shape/rhythms\, and the meaning of fine-tuning an edge.\nDiebenkorn will give us a chance to play with what we have gathered in a full and painterly and exploratory way.\n\n\n  \n\nThe Weekly Syllabus: \n\nWeek One: A Presentation on Cezanne’s project as an introduction to the Deeper Possibilities of Painting.  Beginning our Still Life painting a la Cezanne and his questions.\nWeek Two: Continuing the painting through the lens of Cezanne.\nWeek Three: An introduction to Matisse’s project and how it was influenced by Cezanne.  Beginning our still life painting through the lens of Matisse.\nWeek Four: Continuing the still life painting and focusing on shape\, compositional re-working\, and edges.\nWeek Five: A 3rd session on the still life painting through the lens of Matisse.\nWeek Six: An introduction to the still life painting of Diebenkorn.  Quick\, playful experimentations with DRAWING still life in with mixed-media through the lens of Diebenkorn.\nWeek Seven: Continuing our exploration of still life in PAINTING through the lens of Diebenkorn.\nWeek Eight: Continuing our exploration of still life in PAINTING through the lens of Diebenkorn.\n\n  \nPainting\, as a form of discovery\, becomes a vehicle for inner exploration and a metaphor for living. \n  \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:***This course is part of the 8-Month training\, PAINTING\, POWER & PRESENCE\, and is available a la carte for those that are not able to participate in the full training.*** \nMeeting LIVE Online for 8 sessions\, every other Tuesday. \nJanuary 10\, 24\, February 7\, 21\, March 7\, 21\, April 4\, 18 \n  \nOver the course of the next few months we will be gathering online\, every other week\, to continue and deepen the conversation. \nThe selection of readings we will be covering this Winter/Spring will support our larger inquiry into the deeper nature of painting.  \nWe’ll begin with an excerpt from Suzi Gablik‘s essential book\, The Reenchantment of Art.  The we’ll move into a selection from the classic Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland.  We continue with a chapter frrom Stephen Nachmanovitch‘s The Art of IS\, exploring improvisation.  This will be followed with an excerpt on the nature of calligraphy from Beyond Representation – Chinese Painting and Calligraphy by Wen Fong.  \nWe’ll also be reading a section from All About Process by Kim Grant.  Her chapter\, The Artist’s Process as Self-Realization\, is quite relevant!  This will be followed by an essay from John Berger and then finishing with Linda Nochlin on Mary Cassatt.\n \nJordan will be facilitating the discussion in a supportive and friendly atmosphere.  Open to painters and non-painters\, of all persuasions\, world-wide. \n  \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.
