SUMMARY:PAINTING THROUGH MODERN MASTERS: Cezanne and Cubism
DESCRIPTION: “How do I move from a more skill-based mode of painting into a more personal\, stronger\, and exploratory way of working?”\n  \n\nThis LIVE Eight Week online course is designed to give participants access to different ways of painting\, moving from a more naturalistic and objective tradition to the more Modern and subjective ways of working found in the twentieth century avant-garde.\n  \n\nFor intermediate and advanced. Course limited to 20 participants.\n  \n\n\nLooking closely at various Modern Masters\, Jordan will be demonstrating how to work with a variety of exercises based on these painters’ explorations and inventions\, such as:\n  \n\n\ncompositional improvisation and discovery\nwarm and cool color to create space\nsubjective experience taking precedent over objective knowledge\nthe painted mark as a unit of personal “world building”\n\n\n  \nWe will start by working with Cezanne and then move on to Picasso and Braque and the inventions of Analytic Cubism.\n  \n\n\nHow did Cezanne “change the game” of painting?\nWhat is the primacy of the rectangle of the canvas and why is it important?\nHow does formal experimentation affect our paths as painters?\n\n\n \nWEEKLY SESSIONS:\nWeek 1: A Power Point presentation of Cezanne’s work\, discussing the nature of his project\, both in relation to his internal experience\, as well as through the external formal invention\, covering the role of rigorous perceptual investigation\, the precedence of experience over knowledge\, his mark as unit of image structure\, and the radical role of compositional improvisation in relation to the rectangle. The Power Point presentation will be followed by a demonstration of Cezanne’s methodology through a graphite drawing of a still life. A LIVE ongoing Q&A will accompany each session.\nWeek 2: Beginning a still life painting in the modality of Cezanne. The sessions will be streamed through 3 cameras focusing on the development on the canvas\, color mixing on the palette\, and an over-the-shoulder view of the mark making.\nWeek 3: Continuing the still life painting and deepening the discussion about perception\, composition and marking. What does it entail to return to a painting that is mid-stride but the paint is dry? How does one continue to mark in an open and fresh way? Also\, how does one attend to the demands of the objective motif and also the accruing complexity and demands of the developing composition?\nWeek 4: Further developing the painting in the mode of Cezanne. Looking at the implications for us now in relation to our own personal paths as painters and in relation to painting in the 21st century.\nWeek 5: Power Point presentation of the development of Analytic Cubism by Picasso and Braque\, discussing the nature of their exploration and the specific formal devices involved\, such as a limited palette\, short staccato marking and edge quality. Followed by a drawing demonstration in charcoal of a still life developed through the lens of Analytic Cubism.\nWeek 6: Beginning a still life painting in the mode of Analytic Cubism. Discussing the mode of depiction that is relying on invention more than on observation of the motif. Looking at why Cubism was such a radical development and how it affected 20th century painting.\nWeek 7: Continuing the development of the Analytic Cubist painting and exploring the developing compositional demands within the parameters of the Cubist project.\nWeek 8: Further developing the still life painting and discussing the possibilities and ramifications for the students in relation to their own work. \nA Facebook members Only Group page will be provided for posting our work\, for supportive community and creative sharing. There will be a weekly review and commentary of student postings on the Facebook page. Click HERE.\n  \nAll sessions will be streamed in HIGH DEFINITION\, providing greatly increased visual acuity of the painted surface and demonstrations. \nAll sessions will be recorded\, archived and available for repeated viewing. \nA Webinar Link will be sent out upon registration. \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.

SUMMARY:PAINTING AND CONSCIOUSNESS: an Online\, Hands-on Course -- Part Two
DESCRIPTION:This LIVE Eight Week Course will consist of drawing and painting exercises exploring the relationship between PAINTING AND CONSCIOUSNESS. \n\nWhat is the underlying nature of the activity of painting?\nCan painting provide access to an understanding of our own deeper nature?\nIs there an aspect of a painting practice that contributes to an overall development of mindfulness?\n\nIn Part Two\, the aspect of COMPOSITION will be emphasized.  Part One is not a prerequisite for Part Two.\n \nFor all levels. Course limited to 20 participants. \n  \nEach week of Part Two will explore LIVE\, in a hands-on approach\, different aspects of the creative discipline of COMPOSITION through the perspective of AWARENESS. \n\nHow does the activity of strengthening and resolving a painting relate to the fundamental ground of awareness?\nWhat is the essential role of the rectangle of the canvas?\nWhat does “wholeness” of the image mean\, and how is it achieved?\nHow does one make compositional decisions and carry them out?\n\nThe course exercises will be demonstrated by Jordan\, and participants will be encouraged to work alongside the demonstrations in order to experience them more fully and raise questions for the LIVE Q&A which will accompany each facilitated exercise. \nAll of the participants’ work done during this course will be reviewed and commented on by Jordan. \nWEEKLY SESSION CURRICULUM\nWeek 1: Discuss what strong composition entails. Look at examples from Old Masters through Modern painters. Examine the 2 main pictorially energetic types of composition\, and the 3 main methods of achieving strong composition. Look at the relationship between strong composition\, wholeness\, and Consciousness. Re-framing the development of strong composition through the lens of Consciousness. Demonstrating the beginning of compositional decision making.\nWeek 2: Discuss the first crossroads in compositional decision making. ROUND 1 of looking at works submitted by course participants\, either taken from Part One\, or done separately on their own. Demonstrate possible compositional moves. Discuss the difference in composition between working representationally and non-objectively.\nWeek 3: What does it take\, inwardly\, to fine-tune a painting into wholeness? Learning how to receive and attend to a painting. What does it mean to wait? Discussing compositional decision making and mindfulness.\nWeek 4: ROUND 2 of looking at course participants’ work\, submitted either from Part One or done separately. Demonstrate with my own work; making compositional decisions with unfinished paintings.\nWeek 5: Look at unfinished paintings by Cezanne from the perspective of Consciousness. What are the implications for us? Demonstrate beginning a composition through the lens of Cezanne.\nWeek 6: Take the unfinished piece from Session 5 and work it further. Relate the previous material from the course as we continue to develop the painting.\nWeek 7: Demonstrate how to look at\, draw\, and paint from Master paintings in relation to composition. What is the difference between copying a painting and analyzing a painting in terms of its composition? How does analyzing a masterpiece’s pictorial composition relate to Consciousness?\nWeek 8: ROUND 3 of looking at course participants’ work\, submitted either from Part One\, Part Two\, or done separately. Wrapping up and Next Steps. \nOne of the goals of this course is the deepening and strengthening of each participant’s painting practice; expanding and enriching the meaning\, experience\, and expression of the act of painting. A related goal of the course is the expansion and deepening of the wider\, cultural meaning of the act of painting. What is the fundamental nature of painting and how might it serve in these times? \nA Members Only Facebook Group will be provided for posting our work\, for supportive community and creative sharing. Click HERE. \nAll sessions will be streamed in HIGH DEFINITION\, providing greatly increased visual acuity of the painted surface and demonstrations. \nAll sessions will be recorded\, archived and available for repeated viewing. \nA Webinar Link will be sent out upon registration. \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.
