SUMMARY:PAINTING & SPIRIT: A One-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The act and practice of painting is a transformative experience.  \nA painting is not simply a picture. A painting is a weaving of energy. \nIf you’ve been feeling the urge to paint — or perhaps you’ve been painting for some years but haven’t yet found your own personal\, authentic way — this one-day workshop is structured to bring you into a deeper and more empowered engagement. \nNot only can we learn how to dig deeply into our painting and end up making stronger work\, but the activity of painting itself can lead to a profound understanding of our essential self and our relationship to the wider world. \nWhile full of formal hands-on exercises\, this offering emphasizes the relationship and interaction between the painter’s inner life and the development of the painting. In addition to the process-oriented and expressive aspects of the workshop\, an essential aspect of the day focuses on how to formally arrive at an aesthetically strong painting – what that means\, how to attain it\, and how that is connected to our felt life. \n \nWe’ll be concerned with both the process — outer and inner — as well as the finished work as an object in the world\, and how this deepening process leads to stronger\, more powerful painting. \nBy providing an integrated process that includes your inner life together with specific formal ways of working\, your painting process becomes inherently authentic and personally meaningful. \n  \n \n  \nThe Workshop Schedule:\n  \n\n\nIntroduction: A Brief Recontextualization of Painting. A PowerPoint presentation looking at the history and prehistory of handmade images\, expanding our understanding of painting beyond the current art world context into a larger sense of human purpose and engagement.\n  \n\n\nSession 1: Painting as Inner Engagement. We are exploring drawing exercises as mindfulness practices: How can mark-making bring us fully into the present moment? Online demonstrations with participants encouraged to work alongside. There will be ongoing Q&A and time to share our work.\n  \n\n\n\n\nExercise 1: Blind Contour Drawing\nExercise 2: Cross Contour and Tactile Projection\nExercise 3: Marking as Notation of Seeing\nExercise 4: Measuring Proportion and Geometry as a Mindfulness Practice\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nSession 2: Painting as Creative Empowerment.   Often emotions like anxiety\, frustration or self-doubt keep us from our painting.  How can we reorient our relationship with difficult emotions in a way that empowers our work? We will explore emotional energy as a catalyst for marking and making.\n  \n\n\n\n\nExercise 1: Marking with Anxiety/Doubt\nExercise 2: Marking with Frustration/Anger\nWhat next?\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nSession 3: Composition as an Awareness Practice. A PowerPoint presentation looking at Composition as an Improvisational and Creative Discipline. Followed by a Live Demonstration and discussion of these topics:\n  \n\n\n\n\nBeing Sensitive to the Entire Rectangle – The Secret of Peripheral Vision\nCompositional Basics – Visual Wholeness and Getting Un-Stuck\nHow to Receive the Painting\nStudio Logistics – Good Light\, a Neutral Wall\, and Stepping-back Space\nIntuition and the Meaning of Waiting\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nConclusion and Next Steps. Painting is a deeply solo creative activity. It is also a powerful vehicle for human interconnection and sharing.\n  \n\n\n\n\nSetting up Your Painting Practice\nPainting as an Energetic Weave\nThe Power and Importance of Presence\n\n\n\n  \n\n \n  \nCourse Includes: \n\n5 Live Zoom Sessions\nThorough Step-by-Step Demonstrations of the Exercises with Live Ongoing Q&A\n3 Continuous Camera Views for Close-ups of the Mark-making and Paint Handling\nRecordings of All the Zoom Sessions Available for Repeated Viewing\n\n  \nStudent Testimonials: \n“Jordan’s teaching is a very heartfelt style of allowing me a way of looking deeper\, digging into the unknown to find something richer\, more joyful\, and more meaningful in the question of why I continue to paint. I came away with many pearls to think over and revisit about my experience. One is feeling into the seeing.” – Michelle Jerome \n“I was seeking a deeper understanding of what it means to paint\, as well as guidance on how to find my personal ‘voice’ and strengthen my studio practice.  I could not have found a better teacher for this stage of my development.  Jordan’s classes have taught me the importance of deep engagement with my subject and how to achieve that engagement.  He has shown me how to become aware of and deploy the specific energies and impulses I bring to the studio each day\, how to assess my work at each step toward completion\, and how to approach my work with exploratory rigor that does not lapse into counterproductive laboriousness.  Jordan’s discussions are full of insight; his demos are outstanding; his critiques are honest\, constructive and extremely helpful in sorting out a painting.  All of this has brought greater clarity\, confidence and joy to my painting practice.” – Leslie Blackmon \n  \nTo register please click on the “+” sign below.

SUMMARY:GROUP CRIT - Spring/Summer 2023
DESCRIPTION:Meeting LIVE Online for 4 sessions\, every other Tuesday.\n \nMay 9\, May 23\, June 6\, June 20 \nJordan will be facilitating a group critique for painters who are interested in exploring together deeper aspects of painting\, what it means for each of us to paint\, and how to strengthen our work\, both formally and internally. \nWhat makes a painting strong and imbues it with presence? \nHow does one clarify one’s own direction and path as a painter? \nHow can we share our work together and create a vital sense of community? \nFor many of us\, we paint because we need to.  There is something in the act of painting that deeply enlivens\, brings us close to truth of our lives – that in-the-moment sense of being present\, engaged\, alive.  There is the possibility of this deepening of engagement becoming our ongoing way of working\, and bringing to our studio practice a fullness of being that empowers our work\, formally and energetically.  How does this happen?  This question will be an ongoing part of our conversation during our sessions. \n  \n“Painting is impact.”  — Avigdor Arikha \n  \nIn a personal\, honest\, friendly and supportive atmosphere\, we will be gathering online for five sessions\, every other week.\n \nThe group will be limited to 10 participants.  Participants are expected to be engaged in their studio practice in an ongoing way\, and are intermediate\, advanced or professional. \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.

SUMMARY:INTERIORS: Making Space\, Part One
DESCRIPTION:One essential and magical aspect of painting is conjuring the experience of space on a flat canvas. In this two-part\, eight-week course\, we will work on creating an interior space through drawing and painting. \nIn Part One\, participants will learn how to develop a convincing interior while working from observation\, focusing on the establishment of architecture\, light and space through geometry and large tonal relationships. \nPart One will consist of clear demonstrations by Jordan\, establishing step-by-step structure of an interior space. \n\nWeek One we will be drawing\, focusing on geometry\, proportion and angles to establish a convincing space through line.\nWeek Two we will work in black and white oil paint\, building on our linear understanding and working to establish the large value relationships of the situation.\nWeek Three and Four will develop the interior in color\, focusing on the development of large tonal relationships\, and the problem of light from the outside coming into an interior space.\n\nIn addition to the demonstrations will be a LIVE ongoing Q&A\, allowing for in-depth conversation covering the nuts and bolts of the exercise\, as well as fielding general questions regarding a painting practice. \nFor all levels.  Course limited to 20 participants. \nA Mighty Networks Course Group Room will be provided for posting our work\, for supportive community and creative sharing.  Jordan will conduct weekly reviews of the work with clear and constructive responses.  To go to the group page please CLICK HERE. \nAll sessions will be streamed in HIGH DEFINITION\, providing greatly increased visual acuity of the painted surface and demonstrations. \nAll sessions will be recorded\, archived and available for repeated viewing. \nA Webinar Link will be sent out upon registration. \nTo register simply click on the “+” sign below.
